Anurag Basu admirers, who had and have immense faith on Basu’s style of work; yes truly it’s a huge news to all of them that Ranbir-Priyanka-Ileana starrer ‘Barfi’, which hit the screen just one week ago on 14th September, nominated as India’s official entry to the Oscar in the best foreign language film category.
The selection of ‘Barfi’ took place at a Film Federation of India (FFI) meeting in Hyderabad on Saturday night. As per reports, the selectors were apparently struggling to choose one out of twenty films applied for nomination. Until the FFI secretary general Suparn Sen made an official announcement on ‘Barfi’s selection, it was truly a nail-biting situation for all. "Barfi! has indeed been chosen as the country's official entry this year," said Suparn Sen in Hyderabad putting all the speculation to an end.
Anurag Basu directed this film superbly depicts the twists and turns of a deaf and mute boy Barfi’s life (played by Ranbir Kapoor) and his love with an autistic girl Jhilmil, played by Priyanka Chopra. Both Ranbir and Priyanka got huge critical acclaims for their brilliant acting. Also the film marks the Bollywood debut of South Indian actress Ileana D’Cruz, whose performance also has been praised from several corners.
On behalf of UTV, which produced the film, the managing director Siddharth Roy Kapur expressed huge satisfaction over ‘Barfi’s selection. “We are honored that ‘Barfi’ has been selected to represent India as its official entry to the Academy Awards 2013. Barfi! is very close to the hearts of all of us at UTV, and it gives us great satisfaction that a film we have developed and nurtured from its inception has met with so much love from audiences and critics worldwide".
’Barfi’ is UTV’s fourth film, after ‘Rang De Basanti’ (2006), ‘Harishchandrachi Factory’ (2009) and ‘Peepli Live’ (2010), which got nomination for Oscar. Congrats all the cast and crews of ‘Barfi’. We can indeed hope for the best.
